The nights are drawing in and the children have returned to school. Soon it will be the half term holidays and Halloween, which is now the second most popular holiday, after Christmas and surpassing Easter. Are you fed up with the same old Halloween activities? Has bobbing for apples, grappling with treacle scones and trick or treating round the neighbourhood gone stale for you and your family? Then try a Halloween weekend in Swindon where great efforts have been made to provide an alternative Halloween experience.
The Swindon and Cricklade Railway has organised a Spooky Ghost Train on either Friday 28th or Saturday 29th October 2011. You will board the train for a four mile trip into the unknown. Who knows who or what else will be on the train with you? What will happen at the stations of Blundon and Hayes Knoll? Just be prepared for the unexpected. The smoke from the train will add to the atmosphere as your train chugs along reminding you of the golden age of steam, a bygone era.
Pumpkins at Roves Farm 19th – 30th October 2011. This fits the bill as yet another unusual activity, again designed with families in mind. The farm has planted over eight hundred pumpkins, many of which will be carved up and cooked into delicious dishes. You will be amazed by the number of things you can do with a pumpkin. There will be a tractor ride where you’ll look have to keep an eye out for unusual pumpkins – this can mean anything considering it is Halloween!
The Nuclear Spill Halloween Party is certainly one for the adults. This will happen at Suju, a Japanese-inspired nightclub from 11pm to 6am and is advertised as the place for Zombies, Mutants and Freaks! It’s definitely not a run of the mill Halloween event.
Finally, the Firewalk and Halloween Party on 30th October 2011. Firewalking is certainly a bizarre thing to do. It is however all in a good cause as it is a charity walk over hot coals in support of the local Prospect Hospice. It is open to all, but I suspect there will be more observers than participants.
So there it is… Swindon has to be awarded the title of having the most out of the ordinary, fantastic Halloween holiday events.
